Title: Controlling LCD Module using PIC Microcontrollers
Author: Vincent Wong
Date: 29th March 2005

The Standard 2 lines by 16 character / 4 lines by 16 character LCD module can be controlled using 8-bit or 4-bit operation. In order to minimize the amount of wire used, I am going to use the 4-bit operation method. The higher nibble of the LCM (LCD Module) is connected to the upper nibble of PORTB.

The Read/Write(R/W'), Enable(E) & Register Select(RS) pins are connected as shown in the schematic. The R/W' pin can be tied permanently to ground only if writing to the LCM, to save 1 I/O pin.
